Alexandra Hayes (New York '15) Wins 2017 Sue Lehmann Teaching and Learning Fellowship
Alexandra Hayes teaches 6th grade reading at Excel Charter School in Brooklyn, New York. In her classroom, students lead their learning by co-teaching lessons, working in book-club groups to create and discuss text-dependent questions, and exploring themes of social justice and inequity. In her second year in the classroom, 100% of her students grew at least two reading levels and 15% of students moved from reading on to above grade level. Alex is a strong advocate within her school for culturally responsive teaching, moving her managers and colleagues in that direction, while in her own classroom, she is guiding her students to become social justice readers. She is a graduate of University of Michigan where she studied fine arts and creative writing. She was also a participant in the Prison Creative Arts Project where she led creative writing workshops with incarcerated youth. Alexandra is one of two 2017 recipients of the Sue Lehmann Teaching & Learning Fellowship.
