What We Do
New York City leads not just the country, but the world, on so many fronts, yet too many of our students aren’t getting a world-class education. New York City’s public school system is the largest in the nation and it is falling short.
Teach For America - New York recruits, develops, and supports emerging leaders to teach in low-income communities throughout NYC. By attracting and retaining diverse, talented, committed educators, we strive to help develop great neighborhood schools that support, inspire, and challenge students to become the leaders our city needs.
Addressing Our City’s Critical Needs
Our city has a critical need for early childhood, special education, math, and science educators. These needs are even more pronounced in low-income communities. Teach for America - New York is helping to fulfill that need with qualified individuals who reflect the backgrounds of their students and help them thrive. Sixty-one percent of our 2016 corps identify as teachers of color, 54 percent are from a low-income background, and 39 percent are native New Yorkers.
Engaging TFA Alumni Across NYC
You will join 4,975 area alumni who are a vital part of a strong and growing movement for educational equity in NYC. Nearly 2,200 are teachers, 150 are school leaders, 50 are system leaders, and 23 are social entrepreneurs. Whatever their current role, we’re working to help all of our alumni take action in service of great neighborhood schools.
